Terminology
The document uses a number of terms, which are explained as follows.
| Functional skills | Used in these guidelines to embrace the skills of literacy, numeracy, language, communication skills, application of number, English, mathematics and ICT. Inspired by, but used differently from, functional skills as developed for the 14-19 curriculum. |
| Skills for Life | Used by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) to encompass literacy, numeracy and language skills up to and including level 2. Now also includes ICT. Title for specific national qualifications for literacy, numeracy and language that are mapped to the Skills for Life Core Curriculum. |
| ESOL | English for speakers of other languages |
| Key skills | An established skills and qualifications range available to all post-16 learners that covers communication, application of number, ICT and the three wider key skills. The latter are not addressed in these guidelines. |

| ALS | Additional learning support |
| CIF | Common Inspection Framework |
