About the project

Purpose of the project

The purpose of this project has been to develop guidelines for managers and practitioners across the further education (FE) sector who wish to embed functional skills (Skills for Life) into the vocational curriculum.

For the purposes of these guidelines the term functional skills is used to describe the traditional Skills for Life areas of literacy, numeracy and language (ESOL) with the addition of information and communication technology (ICT) and the key skills of communication and application of number. The term is inspired by, but used differently from, functional skills as developed for the 14-19 curriculum. The guidelines represent the culmination of the project and are based on detailed research and good practice models.

The project aims to provide clear, practical guidance on how to set up and implement embedded programmes, while identifying the underlying principles and key tasks of the process and demonstrating the benefits to learners.

Target audience

The guidelines are designed to be used flexibly by senior managers, managers and practitioners in the post-compulsory education and training sector.

Although they focus on embedding into vocational programmes, they are equally applicable at all levels of the academic curriculum.

Scope

The project has drawn from existing practice, both regionally and nationally, as well as from current national initiatives and research.
