These downloadable ESOL core curriculum resources documents have been produced using the online adult ESOL online core curriculum, which are part of a central source of information about teaching and learning on www.excellencegateway.org.uk. In order to access this source, it is necessary to register in order to be able to then log in. However, registration is free and takes very little time.
The resource provides a list of useful materials to help new tutors who may not be so familiar with them, to deliver teaching and learning in relation to each core curriculum element. Most resources cover several elements within a skill (Reading/Writing, etc), and sometimes within more than one skill. It is possible to look up particular core curriculum references in some of the resources themselves and select particular worksheets or activities against a curriculum reference – e.g. the online Skills Workshop resources, the Talent website resources section (you need to register, free, in order to be able to access the search facility, and then it is possible to search by curriculum reference), the Citizenship materials, where it is possible to search by curriculum reference, as well (no registration needed), and the Functional Skillbuilder booklets, which have a sheet at the front of each booklet, mapping each worksheet to the relevant core curriculum. Please note that the Skills Workshop website, Literacy section, for Entry Level 3 and Levels 1 and 2, contains very useful resources for the development and practice of text-, sentence- and word-level activities. The ESOL section only contains resources at Entry Levels 1 and 2.
You can also see what is new on the online core curriculum (compared to the original spiral bound paper versions published in 2001/2).
The format used of the resources below gives each curriculum element down the left-hand side and includes underneath the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to develop this area. The web reference in the second column enables you to go directly to the element described. The next column has paper based and online resources to support you in developing learners' skills. Beside this is another selection of resources that promote the practising of the skill to move the learner towards independent mastery. The final column has more information about particular resources. You will need to check the resources available for each element are appropriate for your learners. Not all materials will be suitable to use 'off the shelf'. Materials which are felt to be particularly useful have been highlighted in blue. It should be noted that the development column contains many resources that will also be useful in providing further practice opportunities. These are not duplicated in the practice column. At Entry Level One, however, there are very few resources in the practice column because of difficulties with independent study for learners at this level. One or two suggestions, however, are made.
This document is not an exhaustive list and currently covers the Reading and Writing elements only at each level. However, all the coursebooks mentioned will, of course, also be useful for developing and practicing Speaking and Listening skills.
A particularly useful, new resource available from the LLU Plus is the Skills for Life Materials Development Kit, which is a resources pack containing 11 ready-made teaching resources covering Literacy, Numeracy and ESOL and catering for a variety of learning styles. It also includes a CD-Rom of templates for all of these 11 resources, which teachers can then use to adapt or create their own resources. The 11 resources include a variety of activities as alternatives to worksheets.
More resources can also be found through other publishers' & suppliers' catalogues, such as the Bournemouth English Book Centre (BEBC) or Longman.
For resources which are vocationally related, please see, for example, the Embedded Learning materials on the Excellence Gateway and Key Skills Support Programme (KSSP) website (now the Functional Skills Support Programme – FSSP). Avanti Books also have a large section of vocationally relevant resources for Literacy, Numeracy and ESOL learners. The Learning for Work Series (Campaign for Learning/Work Base Training) also contains some handy booklets for those at E3 and above on topics such as report writing, form-filling, etc. ESOLresources-Entry1Reading.doc (307KB) ESOLresources-Entry1Writing.doc (310KB) ESOLresources-Entry2Reading.doc (340KB) ESOLresources-Entry2Writing.doc (251KB) ESOLresources-Entry3Reading.doc (242KB) ESOLresources-Entry3Writing.doc (343KB) Introduction-CoreCurriculumResourcesDocs.doc (58KB) |
